The Washington Capitals have announced the appointment of Spencer Carbery as their new head coach. Carbery will be replacing Todd Reirden, who was fired after the Capitals were eliminated from the playoffs in the first round.
Carbery has been an assistant coach with the Toronto Maple Leafs for the past two seasons. Prior to that, he was the head coach of the American Hockey League’s Hershey Bears, where he led the team to a 110-63-17 record over three seasons.
Carbery is known for his ability to develop young players and has a reputation for being a strong communicator. He has also been praised for his attention to detail and his ability to create a winning culture.
Capitals general manager Brian MacLellan said in a statement, “We are thrilled to welcome Spencer to the Capitals organization. His track record of success at the AHL level, coupled with his experience as an NHL assistant coach, make him the perfect fit for our team.”
Carbery will be taking over a Capitals team that has been one of the most successful in the NHL over the past decade. The team won the Stanley Cup in 2018 and has made the playoffs in each of the past seven seasons.
However, the Capitals have struggled in the playoffs in recent years, failing to advance past the second round since their championship season. Carbery will be tasked with getting the team back on track and leading them to another deep playoff run.
Carbery said in a statement, “I am honored and excited to be joining the Washington Capitals organization. This is a team with a rich history of success and I am looking forward to working with this talented group of players and coaches.”
The Capitals will begin their 2020-21 season on January 14th against the Buffalo Sabres. With Carbery at the helm, Capitals fans will be hoping for another successful season and a deep playoff run.
