Washington Capitals Alex Ovechkin continues to move closer towards breaking Wayne Gretzky’s all-time goals record. In a 3-2 overtime loss to the Winnipeg Jets on Tuesday, Ovechkin took another step towards that milestone as he scored the 889th goal of his NHL career.

Ovechkin is now just six goals away from surpassing Gretzky’s all-time mark of 894 goals. However, he failed to score in Thursday’s game against the Wild.

With Ovechkin inching closer to the record, hockey fans are beginning to wonder if the Capitals forward will reach it prior to the conclusion of the regular season. According to data compiled by SportsLine, Ovechkin has a 62.17% chance of breaking the record this season.

SportsLine estimates that Ovechkin will likely break the record somewhere between April 12-17. The 39-year old has a 11.35% of breaking the record on April 12 against the Columbus Blue Jackets. That number goes slightly higher on April 13 when the Caps take on the Blue Jackets. The most likely time for him to break it, according to the data, is April 15 against the Islanders at 15.18%.

Ovechkin has scored three goals over his last six games, and has alternated contests in which he’s scored those goals. The Capitals star has racked up six goals in 12 games during the month of March.

Ovechkin currently has 36 goals and 24 assists this season as he bids to reach the 40-goal mark for the third time in the past four seasons.

The Capitals are also pursuing the Presidents’ Trophy, which goes to the team with the most points in the league. With Washington chasing the top seed in the Eastern Conference playoff race, Ovechkin should have plenty of opportunities to put the puck in the net over the final three weeks of the regular season.

As the NHL season progresses, all eyes are on Washington Capitals’ star forward Alex Ovechkin as he continues his pursuit of Wayne Gretzky’s all-time goals record. Projections indicate that Ovechkin has a 62% chance of surpassing Gretzky’s record this season, a feat that would solidify his place in hockey history.

Ovechkin, who currently sits at 730 career goals, is just 165 goals away from surpassing Gretzky’s record of 894 goals. With the shortened 56-game season due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, Ovechkin will need to maintain his scoring pace in order to reach this milestone. However, the 35-year-old Russian winger has shown no signs of slowing down, as he continues to be a dominant force on the ice.

Ovechkin’s scoring ability is unmatched in today’s NHL, as he has consistently been one of the league’s top goal scorers since entering the league in 2005. His lethal shot and physical play have made him a nightmare for opposing goaltenders, and he shows no signs of slowing down as he approaches his late thirties.

If Ovechkin is able to break Gretzky’s record this season, it would be a monumental achievement for the Capitals’ captain. Gretzky’s record has stood for over two decades, and many believed it would never be broken. However, Ovechkin’s relentless pursuit of greatness has put him in position to make history.

While projections indicate that Ovechkin has a 62% chance of surpassing Gretzky’s record this season, nothing is guaranteed in sports. Ovechkin will need to stay healthy and continue to produce at a high level in order to reach this milestone. But if anyone is capable of breaking Gretzky’s record, it’s Alex Ovechkin.

Hockey fans around the world will be watching closely as Ovechkin continues his quest for greatness. Whether he breaks the record this season or not, there’s no denying that Ovechkin is one of the greatest goal scorers in NHL history. And if he does surpass Gretzky’s record, it will solidify his legacy as one of the all-time greats.
