The Philadelphia Flyers have made some big changes to their front office, with Keith Jones joining the team as President of Hockey Operations and Daniel Briere being named the permanent General Manager. These moves come after a disappointing season for the Flyers, who finished with a record of 25-23-8 and missed the playoffs for the fifth time in the last nine years.
Jones, a former NHL player who spent time with the Flyers, Colorado Avalanche, and Washington Capitals, brings a wealth of experience to his new role. He has worked as a hockey analyst for NBC Sports since 2005, providing commentary on NHL games and serving as a studio analyst for the network’s coverage of the Stanley Cup playoffs. Jones also has experience in player development, having worked as a consultant for the New Jersey Devils and as a coach for USA Hockey’s National Team Development Program.
As President of Hockey Operations, Jones will be responsible for overseeing all aspects of the Flyers’ hockey operations, including player personnel, scouting, and player development. He will work closely with Briere, who was named interim General Manager in March after the team fired former GM Ron Hextall.
Briere, a former Flyers player who spent time with the team from 2007 to 2013, has been praised for his work as interim GM. Under his leadership, the team made several key trades and signings, including acquiring forward Kevin Hayes from the Winnipeg Jets and signing defenseman Justin Braun to a two-year contract extension.
Briere’s appointment as permanent GM is a sign that the Flyers are committed to building a winning team. In a statement announcing the move, Flyers Chairman Dave Scott said, “Daniel has done an outstanding job in his role as interim General Manager. He has shown great leadership and vision for our team, and we are confident that he is the right person to lead us into the future.”
With Jones and Briere at the helm, the Flyers are poised to make some big moves this offseason. The team has several key players who are set to become free agents, including forward Travis Konecny and defenseman Ivan Provorov. The Flyers will also have the 13th overall pick in the upcoming NHL draft, giving them an opportunity to add a top prospect to their roster.
Fans of the Flyers are excited about the team’s new leadership and are hopeful that the changes will lead to a successful season next year. With Jones and Briere working together, the Flyers have a strong foundation for building a winning team and bringing a Stanley Cup back to Philadelphia.
