The Edmonton Oilers had the Florida Panthers on the ropes entering Game 7 of the 2024 Stanley Cup Final. Despite dropping three consecutive games to set up a winner-take-all final contest, the Panthers were able to outlast the Oilers, 2-1, in Game 7 to win the first Stanley Cup in franchise history.
At one point in the series, the Panthers had a 3-0 series lead and had the Oilers completely flustered from an offensive standpoint. The Oilers ended up winning three consecutive games thanks to a heroic performance from Connor McDavid, who tallied three goals and seven assists in Games 3-5 to lead the Oilers’ comeback effort.
The Panthers proved to be the better team down the stretch in Game 7. Much like they did throughout the first three games of the Stanley Cup Final, Florida played suffocating defense and goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky was extremely dialed in throughout the night. Bobrovsky ended up stopping 23 of the 24 shots that he faced in Game 7 after surrendering 12 goals over the previous three games.
Despite falling short, Connor McDavid won the Conn Smythe Trophy as the NHL playoff MVP after tallying the fourth-most points (42) in a single postseason. McDavid became just the sixth player from the losing team that has won the Conn Smythe Trophy, and joined Reggie Leach (1976) as just the second skater to earn the honor.
The Panthers played their brand of hockey in Game 7 and were able to secure the Stanley Cup this time around after losing to the Vegas Golden Knights in 2023.
